"Muungano" means "Unity" in Swahili. In December 2009, 350 founding coffee growers — Bahunde, Bahavu, Bashi, Batembo and Congolese of Rwandan origin — chose unity to rebuild.
Located on the slopes of Lake Kivu, between 1,400 and 2,600 metres altitude, the cooperative cultivates an exceptional specialty Bourbon Arabica. Before its creation, producers crossed Lake Kivu at night to sell their coffee in Rwanda — risking their lives.
