Since January 2024, the Muungano Agricultural Cooperative, in strategic partnership with OXFAM Belgium, has launched an intensive training programme on the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This regulation, applicable from 2025, requires that all coffee imported into Europe be produced without deforestation and accompanied by complete traceability.
Training sessions, organised across the 16 cooperative sectors, covered the following topics:
- Plot-by-plot traceability requirements (GPS geolocation)
- Documentation of agroforestry practices
- Non-deforestation and conservation of the Kivu forest
- Due diligence procedures for European buyers
Muungano is one of the first cooperatives in the DRC to proactively pursue EUDR compliance, strengthening its competitive position in the European market where it exports the majority of its production.
