Our Story

From Kiniezire to the World

The Muungano Agricultural Cooperative was born in 2009 in Kiniezire, in the Kalehe territory of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Its name, Muungano — "Unity" in Swahili — reflects the vision of its founders: to bring together scattered coffee farming families to collectively build a chain of excellence.

From the very beginning, Muungano committed to a rigorous quality path. The cooperative invested in modern washing stations, trained its members in good agricultural practices, and established a strict quality control system.

In 2013, the first international certifications (EU Organic, Fairtrade) were obtained — a strong signal to buyers worldwide about the cooperative's seriousness and ambition.
